Going On A Boating Holiday With Children

Sailing is an experience that any child can benefit from. Whether your child is adventurous already or looking to build their confidence, there is so much to be learnt onboard a boat.

From learning how to tie knots to planning a route, there are plenty of things for children to get involved in to really immerse them in the adventure whilst developing their independence.

The Norfolk Broads offer many great activities for children to get stuck into. Our personal favourite stop-off points include: Wroxham Barns, Bewilderwood, the Seals at Horsey Gap and Ranworth Nature Reserve. On the other hand, if on-board entertainment is what you’re looking for, books, puzzles, or classic games that can involve the entire family are always good fun – we have ‘Games packs’ here in the yard – so do shout if you would like to borrow one. We recommend avoiding technology as much as possible to really embrace family time in nature.

Whilst it can definitely be a challenge at times when introducing children to sailing, the way that the adventure can capture that curiosity and excitement is priceless. Generally from about the age of 7-8 children can become more useful crew in helping with the jib etc. By 10 they should be useful crew members and able to take the helm and hoist sails! However, we have children of all ages on our yachts from under 1 to 100!

If you are considering a family sailing holiday, give us a call for advice on which boats would work best for you, as well as further information to consider.

Boat Terms To Know When Booking Your Holiday

If you’re relatively new to sailing, you may have come across a whole array of specific terms and jargon that are often used in the industry, yet rarely explained.

When you book an Eastwood Whelpton yacht, we try to keep everything as clear and simple as possible – after all, booking a holiday shouldn’t be a stressful experience.

When we describe our fleet, we use some specific terminology that you may not have seen before. We thought we would explain the most important below so that your holiday-booking experience can be as easy as possible.

Beam = How we describe the width of the yacht, often not something that you need to think about.

Berths = The number of people able to sleep on a specified yacht, however, we usually label this as ‘sleeps’ on our website (i.e. sleeps 4) to avoid confusion.

Cabins = Bedrooms on a yacht.

Flotilla = A fun group sailing holiday with multiple boats, usually with guidance and support from a lead boat with a Host Skipper & Crew from the boatyard.

Galley = The yacht’s kitchen.

Heads = A toilet on a yacht.

LOA = Length Overall: The maximum length of a yacht’s hull, including overhanging ends. Again, not something that often impacts customers.

Mooring = A method of ‘parking’ the boat that prevents your yacht from floating away.

Skipper = The captain of your yacht, or someone who is on-board to show you the ropes and reassure you.

“Best way to unwind… in the wind! After the fun and excitement of arriving and setting sail, you can feel life’s pressures falling away. Eastwood Whelpton is a lovely family owned boatyard on the beautiful Norfolk Broads. A short stay gives you just enough time to sail up to Hickling and Horsey, two lovely sailing destinations, where you can experience life at a pace it is meant to be. Cannot wait until we go again!”

Welcome Aboard

We are very much looking forward to meeting you all and hope that you will enjoy a great time afloat with us here on the Broads.

Pre arrival information

Prior to your arrival, we need to receive your completed Crew Competency Form and Yacht Acceptance Certification, please find these linked on the right hand side of the page.

There you will also find some helpful resources for your sailing holiday, including our Briefing for Summer 2022, our Sailing Holiday Packing Checklist, and Skippers Handbook, which includes information about local pubs, shops, and cafés.

20190824 155524

If you intend to bring your own bedding, pillows and/or Lifejackets please make sure that we are aware in advance so that we can avoid putting these items on your yacht.

We also ask that you have settled any outstanding amount on your holiday invoice prior to your arrival either by Bank Transfer or Card Payment. Our bank details can be found on your invoice. Do call us if you need help, we do not accept cash or cheque payments.

For safety reasons, please do remind your crew to bring non-slip (deck) shoes for wearing on deck at all times.

When You Arrive

On arrival, please find a space to park in the main yard car park.

Your arrival time will be detailed in your welcome email and is for your yacht check-in and safety briefing appointment. It is important that you meet this time slot – if you are running late due to traffic, call us so that we can try and move things around if needed for you.

Direct Boarding and Handover/Safety Briefing

On arrival please wait by the Welcome Station on the quay and you will be escorted to your yacht by one of the team for your yacht handover and safety briefing.

You should assume that the briefing will last between 45 and 60 minutes and it is an essential part of ensuring your safety on the water. Waiting members of your group are asked not to enter any staff team areas (including the workshop, sail loft or any other yachts) for your own safety.

After the briefing is complete, we ask that you unload your car into your boat and leave the yard to begin your holiday.

Onboard Essentials

0 lessons DSC 0286 16

Adult lifejackets will be ready for your crew in the cockpit of your yacht. Any children’s buoyancy will need to be fitted – a member of our team will supervise and recommend and allow a parent/guardian to check the fit.

A complimentary welcome bag of freshly ground coffee, Norfolk tea, milk and cake is available onboard for you to enjoy a drink as you unload, unpack and start to unwind! We also provide a full skippers handbook and maps, tide tables and tourist information on board.

We are happy to receive a supermarket delivery on the morning of your arrival and put everything on board for you before you arrive – if you could arrange any deliveries from 11am onwards, that would be helpful. There is also a local community shop here in Upton, which can provide a starter pack hamper, let us know if you would like to order this or contact the shop directly.

Returns

On your day of departure, we ask that you vacate your boat by 0900 at the very latest and by 0830 if at all possible. Please dispose of all rubbish using the recycling bins available at the yard.

Please ring or email us on your final afternoon with any issues or breakages and also fill out the report form that you will find with the Skippers Manual; the form should be left in the plastic sleeve on an obvious surface in the yacht when you depart. This will help us to ensure that we can repair and replace items prior to the next guests arriving.

Wishing you and all the family a very happy and safe 2022 – and some super sailing too!
